I love when new, expectant parents call me to capture their maternity & newborn sessions. It’s such a wondrous time, and so full of anticipation. It’s exciting to be a part of something from the beginning, helping to capture these lovely, life-changing moments. Marce called me when she was in her last month of pregnancy, and I am so happy now that she did! Her little girl arrived a few weeks earlier than expected, so we caught this moment just in time! We spent part of the session at their home, then headed out to Gamble Gardens for some lovely outdoor photos.

When Sarah called me to set up her session, I was so excited to hear her say that she wasn’t interested in any posed portraits.  In general, I approach my shoots with a focus on capturing families in a natural, storytelling way – which means undirected and unposed.  That said, I often find that parents want a camera-aware picture of their whole family as well.  And I get that – I’m a parent too!  I always say, here’s one for grandma and grandpa (or the holiday card, etc!).  So if that is part of the request list, we strategize about ways to capture the “posed” shot in a way that is hopefully fun and painless!  But Sarah knows her children well, and she understood that to truly capture them, no posing was required.
