My daughter (now almost 13!) had the most incredible kindergarten teacher. Mrs. Duke continues to be a legend in our family, and to be honest, I have co-opted many of her tactics and sayings, because they were just that wise & awesome! One of my very favorites, was when she used to say to the children, “Good job noticing!” whenever they pointed out important details; details in a story they were discussing during circle time, or in a math problem, or in everyday challenges. I loved how their faces lit up when she complimented their observation skills, and I’ve often thought about how important a skill that can be to nurture.
As a wedding photographer, sometimes I think that at least half of my job is about noticing. It’s that heightened awareness that allows me to capture a moment in 1/250th of a second. And sometimes what I find in my careful observations, is how a couple is beautifully connected and in tune with one another. And sometimes that connection is so strong, that it seems they almost move in concert together. They lean in at the same time. Their hands find one another’s without looking. They know exactly how they fit together, and they find comfort in those spaces. And the funny thing, is that often they are not even aware of it, because it is so natural to them. If I’m lucky, I’m able to capture it through my lens.
Nadine & Jeremy are a couple with that kind of connection. They’ve been together for 14 years, and I loved watching them together. The strength of their love and support for one another was beautiful, and it made spending time with them truly wonderful and inspiring. I hope I was able to capture it in their images. I’m hoping Mrs. Duke would say “Good noticing!”
