Lori Paladino Photography ~ Beautiful Images of Love & Life

As wedding & portrait photographer, my focus is on capturing real moments and beautiful images that retell stories of love & life.

How it all began... It seems I have always had a camera in my hands, drawn from a very early age to the stories revealed in each photograph. My father dabbled in photography when my siblings and I were young, and shot some beautiful pictures of each of us. Thinking of these images, I realize that I no longer place a distinction between actual memory and my minds memorization of these photographs. And I don’t worry about it. Instead, I am so grateful for the window I have into my family and its history.

The moments I have spent drinking in photographs of my families and their histories are both windows and bridges connecting past to present. I treasure these gifts. And they inspire me. As a parent, I want to provide my own children with these gifts of memory and history. And as a photographer, it is my privilege and my pleasure to provide these same gifts to others.

It has been 6 years now that I have been photographing professionally in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, and I am so grateful to be able to both witness and capture the love and joy between couples and families.

Thanks for visiting my blog - feel free to leave me a comment too!

Newborn Session with Baby Brian!

For me, this is really what it is all about. I photographed Joanna & Eric’s wedding in the Fall of 2006, and this spring they emailed and said they were expecting their first addition this summer! And they wanted to start talking about capturing his first images to share. I was so excited & honored be invited to another milestone in the lives of these two amazing people!

I let Joanna know that as counter-intuitive as it may feel during those first few days, that she should call or email from the hospital & I could clear some time asap. The very best time to capture “newborn” images vs. “infant” images (if you have had children, or have spent time with new families, you probably understand how fleeting and very different these first stages are) is in the first 2 weeks. Babies often still have their “langou” (a.k.a. the fuzzie wuzzies in our household), sleep almost non-stop (this changes rather quickly!) and are still inclined towards a fetal position not ready just yet to kick out and stretch all their limbs (all that time in momma’s tummy is one comfortably hard habit to break), which means lots of sweet, curled up in a ball, snuggly images.

And they are so, so, so tiny at first. We are all in awe. Awe and wonder. And then they really start to grow. And grow. SO fast.

Now Brian, was born a few weeks earlier than expected. Just a little over 5lbs when he was born, I met him at 9 days old and he still so tiny, but oh my goodness, so cute. I was thrilled to get to hold him at different parts of the session. What a love.

Take a peek at some of these images.

In these images, I have Brian cuddled up on a small, folded up blanket, on a leather ottoman. Just to give you a sense of perspective…

In this one, we set a few blocks near Brian, that normally decorate his room. Each block is about 4 inches squared on each side….

And look at how in love his parent are with him… and eachother.

I love these two of Brian in Eric’s arms, and then surrounded by both of his parent’s arms. Ooooh, he will not fit this way for long!

And this one is so funny. After a 2 hour session, even at a super mellow, slow pace, you could see that Brian was tuckered out. Here, he’s self soothing with a little binky time. I love how even at 9 days, he’s protectively hanging on to it for dear life. I can almost hear him saying, “don’t even think about taking this away right now!” He was such a good sport!!!

So while Brian signed off - we snapped a few more of his father Eric Storey, for his campaign! Eric is running for District 9 Supervisor in San Francisco. Eric is a truly genuine, thoughtful and committed candidate. He’d be a great asset to District 9.I encourage you to read more about Eric, his goals and his story here.

Congratulations Joanna & Eric! And welcome, welcome Brian! Thank you for letting me be a part of this truly amazing time!

Stephanie & Tim ~ St. Dominic’s & The Green Room, War Memorial Building

Ooooh…. these two are so in love!!!  While photographing their day, and then again while editing through their images, I must have had the biggest perma-grin.  Really, when you see these two look at one another, you’ll understand.  So sweet.  And inspiring.  I feel so lucky to have been able to witness & capture their wedding day.

The hardest part has been narrowing down the images.  I can only publish a few of my faves here, so please feel free to watch their slideshow for more faves.  To register to view their images, head to their Pictage event here.

Stephanie got ready at the JW Marriott in Union Square in San Francisco.  It was so much fun to capture the getting ready shots here - the room had all this great detail, with polkadotted curtains and great contrasting red & yellow decor.

Stephanie and her family had the sweetest, most tender relationship.  You can see where she got her affectionate and warm personality.  I love this shot with her parents!

Stephanie was so excited as we got ready to head to the church!

Here’s a fun one I grabbed of the guys.  They wanted an “Abbey Road” pic!  So fun!

Stephanie & Tim were married at St. Dominic’s in San Francisco; a gorgeous church in the process of a full restoration.  The architectural elements were off the charts, and I could have photographed there all day long.

This next one has to be one of my absolute favorites of the day!  I just love, love, love how Tim can’t help but smile as he looks at Stephanie.  Seriously, I get all choked up looking at this image.  I am pretty sure, that it’s exactly the look that every person wants to see on their future spouse’s face.

Here’s a fun one I caught in the side-view mirror from the cable car ride to reception!

And then some of my favorite portraits we shot in the courtyard between the War Memorial Buildings, across from San Francisco City Hall.  Another dreamy set of shots with the 85L lens - I’m so  in love with this lens!

Here’s one with a fun vintage action called “Old Skool” from Totally Rad Actions.  So fun - I love both names - and I love, love, love this action.

Beautiful, San Francisco City Hall!

And then, my definite fave from the day - Stephanie & Tim’s first dance.  I turned off my flash for this shot, and just used available light so that I could capture the rays of sunlight that were streaming into the room, as someone had placed an order with the sun for some natural, dramatic spotlights.  So good.

The reception at The Green Room was amazing!  Stephanie & Tim’s friends and family gave beautiful toasts and really know how to shake it on the dancefloor!  Feel free to view more fun images in the slideshow.

Gustavo & Melissa both caught some great shots as well - it’s always so fun to shoot with such a great team!

Thanks so much Stephanie & Tim for letting us be a part of your amazing day!

Sharon & Matt ~ Palm Event Center

It was so much fun to be a part of Sharon & Matt’s wedding day!!!  To view their slideshow, click here.  Or to register to view their wedding images online, click here.

These two are so in love, so warm and generous and also have great taste in music and shoes!!!

Such happiness to see Matt and all the groomsmen wearing Vans!  Wouldn’t it have been great if all the bridesmaids had all been wearing legwarmers with lots of bangle bracelets, and maybe a pair of Jellies?  Or was that just my sense of fashion in the 80s?!  Okay… I digress.

But in all seriousness, look at how completely in love these two are…

So sweet!

The Palm Event Center is such a beautiful setting for a wedding.  We had to grab a fun shot with the palm trees down the driveway, and of the gorgeous grounds.  SO many fun places to shoot…

One of the things I loved most about Sharon & Matt’s wedding was how much they personalized the day.  Beyond the shoes, they also decided to forgoe the traditional wedding cake for their favorite desserts - cheesecake and… yes… MINT IT’S ITs!!!  I guess there were other flavors too, but who needs other flavors… Ummm… YUM!!!!

Matt also got up to D.J. a few as well - very cool!

Sharon & Matt, thanks so much for letting Gustavo, Melissa and I be a part of your amazing day!  Soooo beautiful and so much fun!

Newborn Session with Clay!

Oh, photographing newborns is so lovely!  It passes soooooo quickly, this little brand-spankin-newness!  And it’s so incredibly sweet!

Clay was such a great baby, so sweet and observant and good natured.  And so darn cute!  He has the cutest dimples - just like his beautiful mama!  To view more of their session, you can view their slideshow.  To register to view their images online, click here.

For our session with Clay, I brought Melissa (my wonderful editing assistant, babysitter and a budding associate photographer!) as a training session.  Newborns can be tricky to photograph, for many reasons, so it’s great to have the opportunity to pass along a few pointers to keep the session relaxed and help create some beautiful images!

I love this one that Melissa caught!  It’s such a great catch, because little Clay won’t fit that way for too long!

And here are a few more faves from the session!

Aileen & Paul ~ Engagement Session, Lake Merritt & Oakland Rose Garden

Aileen & Paul are getting married on August 9th at the Berkeley City Club!  To register to view their wedding images on Pictage, click here.

I had such a good time photographing them and getting to know them better at their engagement session, and I’m so excited to photograph their beautiful day.  Here is the full slideshow of the engagement session, or scroll below for a few highlights.

I love, love, love shooting at new places, and Aileen & Paul’s engagement session gave me some great opportunities.  I’ve been to Lake Merritt a number of times, but I haven’t actually shot there.  We started the session there, and although it was still really bright out, I was happy with the sweet, soft glow it provided to the shots.

So sweet!

Since Aileen & Paul live in Oakland, they know all the beautiful spots.   Next we went to the Oakland Rose Garden… which blew my mind!  It’s tucked into a residential area, and so peaceful and lovely.  I could have shot here for hours!

I shot most of these with my good old 50mm opened all the way… I call it my “dreamy lens”!

These two are so darn cute & I loved the vintagey look of Aileen’s dress!!!  And of course, playing with the backlight… one of my favorite things!

Aileen and Paul have such great smiles and expression.  This more serious one is a favorite too!  I had so much fun photographing them both!

To end the shoot, we headed up to Grissly Peak in Berkeley, where Paul proposed!  So sweet!  These two shots were my absolute favorites of the day.  I’m a sucker for a beautiful silhouette shot, but being able to frame it with the beautiful trees heading up to the spot where Paul proposed… well that’s the kind of surprising moment that if you are lucky enough to catch and capture, just brings it all together.

More soon!  Can’t wait to see what we capture on August 9th!

Blue Sky Studios - The Mini-Session Experiment!

June 24th… the experiment took place.

22 children, 14 families, 8 hours of natural light shooting in the beautiful Blue Sky Studios in San Francisco!!!

Bring it on!!! :)

It was soooooo much fun!  All of the children & families involved with the experiement were previous clients and good friends.  I was so excited to see and hangout with these cutiepies - even if just for 30 short minutes each.  We had a blast, threw around lots of balls, sat in lovely chairs and soft rugs, occassionally bonked heads (and bravely recovered!), wore tutus and danced around.

And we got some GREAT images!  I’m so happy with the results.  I was hoping that even though we were in a studio, that we’d still be able to get fun, natural, full-of-life images.  I think we got it!

Here is a fun slideshow of the highlights from the day.

Below I’ve also included just one fave of each kiddo!  It was so hard to narrow it down.

Enjoy & look out for more details future mini-session dates!

Documenting the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp!!!

I am so so so EXCITED to be photographing the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp! As a way of introduction, and to provide some context, I thought I would offer some background on the camp and my interest in volunteering to document this first year of the camp. There is a lot of detail here, and much provided by the BAGRC site, but I promise, images are coming soon!

The Bay Area Girls Rock Camp is modeled after the Girls Rock Camp in Portland, Oregon, and this is it’s first year in the Bay Area. I found out about it through a documentary just released about the Portland camp, called Girls Rock. It’s an amazing documentary, and will be released on DVD this Fall - definitely add it to your rental cue. So, after learning more about the camp, I contacted the Bay Area founders to find out if they would like to have their first year documented.

There are so many reasons why this project appealed to me. Not the least of which, is the mission of the camp (from BAGRC site):

“to empower girls through music education, promoting an environment that fosters self-confidence, creativity and teamwork. The BAGRC strives to challenge gender stereotypes, encourage collaboration and tolerance among peers, and provide a comfortable space for people of all backgrounds to express themselves. Through music lessons, workshops, group activities and performance, girls will acquire skills that will help guide them throughout their lives.”

As a mother of a 7-year old daughter, the story & mission of the camp really hit home for me.

I’ve also been singing since I could speak, spent many a summer at “music camp,” sang with a group of 14 women all throughout college, and then with a theremin-led lounge band in SF until I was about 7 months pregnant with Izzi. Having children redirected my creative outlets back to photography for many reasons, but my passion for music will always be interwoven into my sense of self.

Needless to say, the storyteller in me loved the idea of helping to document the first year of the camp here in the Bay Area. I was also really drawn to the idea of being the “fly on the wall” for 5 full days, being able to observe quietly, while challenging myself to find ways to tell the story in images.

The camp is in Oakland, at the Julia Morgan School for Girls on the Mills College Campus. The girls are all aged 8-18 (yes! Izzi can’t wait to be 8 so that she can attend next summer!), and they are an amazing and diverse group of girls. I have been completely blown away watching them interact and learn and collaborate and transform this week. Observing their courage and strength and shine in the past few days, has been an incredible privelege. I am filled with hope and awe.

A brief synopis of how the camp is structured (from BAGRC site):

“Campers form bands on the first day of camp, then spend five days learning to play their instrument of choice, and collaborating with their bandmates to write an original song. Daily lessons are held in small groups of 3-5 students, grouped according to experience.

Workshops address many aspects of being a musician and being a girl. Topics include songwriting, self-defense, image and identity, live sound tech and more.

Campers also get a chance to see live bands perform each day at lunchtime, followed by a Q&A session with the musicians.

On the Saturday following camp, each of the camper bands will perform their original music at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, open to family, friends, and the public.

By the end of camp even the most shy among us will be able to crash, bang, twang and screech with her new skills and with her newfound friends. A staff of female volunteers provide instrument lessons, band coaching, and lead workshops.”

A quick note on the volunteers. Well, maybe not so quick. I have so much to say! ;)These women are incredible. I am inspired each day watching them with the girls. They are all volunteering for the week, to manage the bands, teach, coach and lend a hand wherever needed. They are musicians, teachers, advocates and believers in the power of women. And because they were all once young girls as well, they each bring their own unique experiences to the camp. Yet however different in experience, they all approach the girls with the inherent belief that the girls are all “creative, resourceful and whole.” Meaning that they are fostering a learning process and experience that allows the girls to find their creativity at their own pace, on their own path and in a way that honors who they are and the choices they make.

Finally, here is a schedule of what a typical camper day looks like (from BAGRC site):

8:45-9 Camper arrival and check-in
9-9:30 Morning Assembly with skits and camp song
9:30-11:30 Instrument Instruction
11:30-12:30 Lunch w/ Live Band and Q&A session
12:30-2:45 Band Practice (Loud Band Practice)
2:45-3:30 Band Meeting (Quiet Band Practice)
3:30-5 Workshops
5-5:30 Afternoon Assembly
5:30 Camper departure

There is a ton more information on the BAGRC site - so check it out!

I’ll start posting some images from each day starting tomorrow. I may not be able to post everyday, as I’m not home until 7pm, then hanging with the family until bedtime. That said, I’ll get each of the days and the final showcase at Bottom of the Hill up in chronological order, so you can follow along if you like! :)

In the meantime, here is a quick fave from the first hour of camp, of three girls looking over the camp handbook while waiting for the morning assembly to begin.

GIRLS ROCK!!!

Amazing. Inspiring. Life changing.

I’m photographing the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp all week long. It’s their first year here in the Bay Area, and I’ve volunteered to document the whole week with images.

Definitely check out the camp’s website. The mission of empowering young women through creating music is so inspiring, and I can see it happening each day. I’m doing my best to capture it too. I’m going to add more images to the blog as well as the week continues. The image above is of the girls excersizing their voices on Day One. Incredibly loudly. Rock on girls!

Heather & John ~ Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral & the United Irish Cultural Center, San Francisco

Heather & John had a beautiful, quintessential, San Francisco wedding on May 31st, 2008!

Heather got ready at the Fairmont Hotel, with incredible views of the city from her suite. The ceremony was held where her grandparents were married, in Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco.

After the ceremony, the wedding party took a trolley car through San Francisco to some of the most scenic sites and architecture in the city. I’ve included some favorites below. More are in the slideshow!

Finally, the reception was held at the United Irish Cultural Center, where John’s family is actively involved.

The beautiful details were expertly arranged by Cindy Danbom and her team at Belle Notte Events, and the cultural ties encorporated into the floral design by Nancy Liu Chin Designs, which transformed the amazing reception space. What a beautiful and fun night!

I loved the lighting design, and found some great moments backlighting the fun on the dancefloor. Here are a few faves:

So fun!

Heather & John’s guests had a great time too - and we have the pictures to prove it! :) Here, the heroine was the beautiful Cindy Danbom, wearing the many hats that an expert planner must… carefully stiching the chin of one guest who’s Irish wedding jig got a bit too dangerous! It’s all fun & games until…. :)

Really though, a good time was definitely had by all!

You can view Heather & John’s wedding slideshow he

Thank you Heather & John for letting Cara, Melissa and I help capture your wonderful wedding day!!!

Katherine & Charles’ Wedding!

Katherine & Charles were the first wedding of the season for me ~ Sunday, May 18th, 2008! And if they are to be a precursor of things to come, I am one lucky photographer!!! Who could ask for a sweeter couple or a more fun wedding?!!!

Kat & Charles were married at the Embassy Suites in Burlingame, CA, with friends and family all around. To view a slideshow of their wedding, click here. To register to view their pictures online, click here.

Check out the cool fish-eye shots of the ceremony that my 2nd photographer, Gustavo Fernandez shot! Gustavo is so talented! Such a great person to work with and be around, and then on top of that - he has an awesome eye, and an incredible sense of timing! He has an impecable sense of the right lens for the right moment! Yay Gustavo!!!

Then to the reception! Lots of fun photo booth pics, and such a sweet first dance and toasts!!!

We ended the beautiful celebration by bringing Kat & Charles out to the water at the end of the night to capture the sweet soft light of the sunset, against the San Francisco Bay. Look closely and you can peek a jet flying overhead.

So fun. So romantic. So full of love!

Thanks Katherine & Charles for letting us capture your beautiful day!!!
